What the group chat costs everyone
To start one you need every participant's phone number, and they need each other's — which is a genuine privacy problem at a wedding or a work event where half the people are strangers. Everyone then gets notified for every reaction and reply, often for weeks, and the photos themselves are re-compressed by the messaging app on the way through.
A link asks for none of that. You send it to whoever you want, individually or in an existing thread, and nobody is enrolled in anything.
One gallery instead of forty messages
Sending photos through a chat means one message per photo, in whatever order they upload, interleaved with people replying. Finding a specific picture a week later means scrolling.
