A format browsers read and software does not
AVIF is the newest image format in wide use, built on the AV1 video codec. Browsers adopted it quickly because it compresses better than anything else; desktop software largely has not, so a file saved from a web page opens in Chrome and is refused by the editor you actually needed it for.
PNG is the opposite: nothing refuses it. Converting trades AVIF's efficiency for universal support, which is the trade worth making when the file has to leave the browser.
Why PNG rather than JPG here
AVIF is frequently used for graphics with transparency — icons, illustrations, UI assets — because it supports an alpha channel. JPG does not, so converting those to JPG replaces the transparency with white. PNG keeps it.
For a straightforward photograph with no transparency, JPG produces a far smaller file and is the better target.

- Is transparency preserved?
- Yes. Both AVIF and PNG support an alpha channel, so transparent areas come through unchanged.
- Will the PNG be much larger?
- Yes, often several times. AVIF is the most efficient format in general use and PNG stores everything losslessly.
- Does HDR survive?
- No. A standard PNG is written in ordinary dynamic range, so an HDR AVIF loses its extra range.
- Why can I open it in my browser but not my editor?
- Browsers shipped AVIF support early; most desktop applications have not added it. That gap is the usual reason for converting.
