Why sites moved to WebP
WebP typically lands 25–35% smaller than a JPEG of equivalent quality. On an image-heavy page that is the difference between a fast Largest Contentful Paint and a slow one, which is why PageSpeed Insights recommends next-generation formats by name and why most CMS platforms now generate WebP automatically.
The format is not new any more: every current browser reads it, and has for years. Converting a folder of JPEGs before uploading them is one of the cheapest page-speed wins available.
What to watch when re-encoding
A JPEG is already lossy. Converting it to WebP re-encodes lossy data a second time, so work from the highest-quality JPEG you have rather than one that has been through several rounds of saving. At 92% the second pass is not visible; at low quality settings it compounds.
The saving varies with content. Photographs compress well. Images that are mostly flat colour or text sometimes come out barely smaller, or occasionally larger — worth checking the output size rather than assuming.

- How much smaller will the files be?
