Why your iPhone photos are HEIC in the first place
Since iOS 11, iPhones shoot in HEIC by default — Apple's name for a still image stored in the HEIF container, compressed with HEVC. It is genuinely better than JPEG at the job: roughly half the file size at the same visible quality, with support for 16-bit colour and depth data that JPEG has no room for.
The problem is everything that is not an Apple device. HEVC is patent-encumbered, so decoders are not free to ship, and a great deal of software simply never added one. Windows shows you a thumbnail and then wants a paid codec from the Store. Plenty of web upload forms, print shops, insurance portals and older photo editors reject the file outright or show a grey box.
What changes when you convert
A JPG is the most widely readable image format there is — nothing made in the last thirty years will refuse it. The trade is file size: expect the JPG to come out roughly twice the size of the HEIC for the same picture, which is the cost of a format everything can read.
Depth maps, Live Photo motion and any HDR gain map do not survive: a JPG holds one flat frame. If you need those, keep the original HEIC as well — converting here never touches the file on your phone.
Location and camera data
A photo from a phone carries EXIF: GPS coordinates for where it was taken, the camera model, and the exact capture time. Re-encoding here drops all of it — the converter writes out pixels and nothing else, so the JPG you download does not say where you were.
That is a side effect of how the conversion works rather than a setting you have to find, but it is worth knowing if you were planning to send the result somewhere public.

- Does the converted file keep my location data?
- No. The JPG is written from the decoded pixels, so GPS coordinates, camera model and capture time are not carried over.
- Where does the conversion happen?
- On our servers — the file is uploaded, converted, and made available to re-download for 7 days, after which it is permanently deleted. If you would rather nothing left your device at all, use a converter that runs in the browser instead.
- What about HEIF files?
- Same thing. HEIC and HEIF are the same container; the extension differs by who wrote the file. Both are accepted.
