Why PNG rather than JPG for an iPhone photo
For sending a holiday picture, JPG is the better answer — smaller, and accepted everywhere. PNG earns its place when the photo is going to be worked on: pasted into a design tool, cut out, annotated, or re-saved several times.
Every JPG save is lossy, and the damage accumulates across edits. A PNG stays exactly as it is no matter how often it is opened and saved, which makes it the safer intermediate format for anything that is not finished.
Expect a large file
HEIC is one of the most efficient image formats in use and PNG is one of the least. A 2 MB iPhone photo can become a 20 MB PNG — not because anything went wrong, but because lossless storage of twelve megapixels genuinely takes that much room.
If the size is a problem and the image is a photograph rather than artwork, JPG is almost certainly what you want instead.
Location data
The conversion writes out pixels only, so the GPS coordinates, camera model and capture time in the original do not carry into the PNG.

- Should I convert to PNG or JPG?
- PNG for editing, design work or anything you will re-save repeatedly. JPG for sending, uploading and printing — it is a fraction of the size and universally accepted.
- Why is the PNG so much larger than the HEIC?
- HEIC is highly efficient and PNG is lossless. A tenfold increase is normal for a full-resolution phone photo.
- Does it keep my location data?
- No. The PNG is written from decoded pixels, so EXIF — including GPS — is not carried over.
- Does it work with HEIF files too?
- Yes. HEIC and HEIF are the same container and both are accepted.
