Skipping the JPEG detour
The usual route for an iPhone photo destined for a website is HEIC to JPG, then JPG to WebP — two lossy encodes when one would do. Converting straight to WebP avoids the intermediate step and the quality it costs.
The result also stays close to the size of the original. HEIC is efficient because HEVC is efficient; WebP is the nearest widely readable format, so you keep most of that advantage instead of paying for it in JPEG bytes.
When JPG is still the better target
If the photo is going anywhere other than a web page — a print lab, an insurance portal, an older desktop editor, an email attachment someone will open in Outlook — convert to JPG instead. WebP is excellent in browsers and still unevenly supported outside them.
