Lossless versus small
PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was, which makes it the right format for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with hard edges or flat colour. It is the wrong format for photographs: with no two pixels quite alike, there is little for its compression to exploit, and the file stays large.
JPEG approximates instead. On a photograph that is invisible and the file collapses to a fraction of the size. On a screenshot of text it is visible — you get faint haloes around letters. Which format you want depends entirely on what is in the image, so convert photographs freely and think twice about interface screenshots.
Transparency becomes white
A JPG has no alpha channel. Anything transparent in the PNG has to become some colour, and this converter uses white — the same choice Photoshop's "Save As JPEG" makes, and the one that looks right on the overwhelming majority of pages and documents.
If the transparency is the point — a logo meant to sit on a coloured background, say — converting to JPG will visibly ruin it. Choose WebP output instead, which keeps the alpha channel and is still far smaller than the PNG.
Getting under a size limit
Upload forms that cap attachments at a few hundred kilobytes are the usual reason for converting. Lower the quality setting before converting and watch the resulting size — dropping from 92% to 80% typically halves the file again with very little visible change on a photograph.
Common questions
- What happens to transparent areas?
- They are flattened onto white. JPG cannot store transparency, so it has to become a solid colour, and white matches what Photoshop and most other converters do.
- How do I keep transparency?
- Choose WebP as the output format instead. WebP keeps the alpha channel and still produces a much smaller file than the original PNG.
- How much smaller will the JPG be?
- For a photograph, usually 5–10 times smaller. For a screenshot of mostly flat colour, sometimes barely smaller at all — PNG is already efficient at that kind of image.
- Can I control the file size?
- Yes. Lower the quality slider before converting. 80% is a good target when you need to get under an upload limit.
- Is there a watermark?
- No. The converted file is your image and nothing else.
